Since the inception, the Department of Disaster Science & Management (DSM) has been engaged in doing full-fledged research work in the field of disaster management of Bangladesh. Education at DSM is strongly linked to our research and professional domain in the field of Hazard Science and Disaster Management. Its niche is the analysis of earth, environmental & social sciences and disaster risk information to enable answering concrete disaster-related problems which will enhance nation's resiliency. DSM wants to obtain its position as an international center of excellence, as well as center for training and capacity development through the scientific innovation in disaster risk reduction.
Though still in a nascent stage in comparison with many other departments of the university, the research activities of DSM are laudable. Faculty members of the department have their distinct research interests. Some of the research activities of DSM are outlined here to give an idea about our recent activities.

The DSM team led by 4 faculty members along with 31 students went to the research area on 24th November of 2014 and stayed there for 5 days to collect data. The draft of research report was submitted on 10th December and the final report was submitted on 15th December of 2014.
For an economic and intelligent design of foundation for civil structures, determination of subsurface geological and geotechnical properties as well as the earth structure is a fundamental pre-requisite. A plausibly accurate conception of the geological set-up in relation to the sedimentary history is essential to correlate or review the consistency of the subsurface section.
Natural and man-made hazard, such as flood, water logging, river bank erosion, subsidence earthquake etc. are the regular and frequent events distressing the urban areas in Bangladesh. The Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh is alarmed and recently turned out to be concerned about these happenings. Consequently much attention has been paid for planned and safe urbanization of the country. "Besarkari Abashik Prakalper-Bhumi Unnayan Bidhimala, 2004" executed from March 01, 2004 for safe and planned urbanization in private sector.
Clearance Certificate from the Geological Survey of Bangladesh (GSB) on geological condition of the project area for land development in private sector has been incorporated in mentioned rules.
The Jalshiri Abashon Project authority, Bangladesh Army, Dhaka has been entrusted with the Department of Disaster Science and Management, University of Dhaka for the exploration of surface and sub-surface geological and geotechnical conditions for the site development of Jalshiri Abashon project area. A detail geological and geotechnical investigation has been carried out to determine both the surface and sub-surface geological and geotechnical properties and also the natural and man-made hazard assessment of Jalshiri Abashon project area. This investigation has been conducted according to the requirements of the Rules of Land Development of Private Residential Project, 2004'.
